What it measures

Understanding Conversion Rate

Conversion rate is the percentage of measured visitors who complete a defined action. The action might be a purchase, lead form, trial signup, activation step, or another meaningful outcome. A 3% conversion rate means three conversions occurred for every 100 visitors in the chosen dataset. Keep numerator and denominator compatible: unique purchasers should normally be compared with unique users, while orders may be compared with sessions if repeat orders are intentionally allowed. Analytics tools can use different attribution windows, consent rules, and identity methods, so document the source and definition before comparing rates. Conversion rate is sensitive to traffic mix. A change in channels, devices, countries, new versus returning users, or promotions can move the blended rate even when the page itself is unchanged. Segment results and use statistically sound tests before declaring a design winner. Higher conversion is valuable only when conversion quality and economics remain healthy; aggressive discounts or low-quality leads can lift the rate while hurting profit. Pair this metric with average order value, customer acquisition cost, retention, and contribution margin.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Should I use users or sessions?

Use the denominator that matches your question and conversion count, then keep that definition consistent across comparisons.

What is a good conversion rate?

Benchmarks vary widely by offer, channel, device, price, and intent. Your own historical baseline is usually more useful.

Can conversion rate exceed 100%?

It can if multiple conversions are divided by unique visitors. For a one-conversion-per-user definition, it should not exceed 100%.

Why do analytics tools show different rates?

Tools may differ in consent coverage, attribution, bot filtering, time zones, session rules, and user identity.
